HOMEWORK - answer the following questions on the blog, due Monday 21st January.
- Write a short paragraph on the relevant aspects of fitness required for a long jumper.

hi
its just to say i think i have lost my revision notes things……but i will do the other key concept instead to prove i HAVE done work.:-) also just wanting to know if you have to mention a training programme at all in the NAB??

homework:
-speed
-coordination
-power
-strength
-flexibility
-agility
-balance
Some of the principles of training used in the long jump would be:
-specificity
=this would be used because my training programme will be customed to my specific needs, e.g. i may need to do more speed training than someone else as that is an area i lack in
-frequency
= this is important as i must train frequently to prevent my body to see results, otherwise, if i only done my training once in a while, my body will not improve as i am not working it hard enough
-intensity
= this is also important as i will have to have a high intensity excerise regime to achieve the best results and to work my body to its full potential.
(sorry if its wrong

1. A long jumper would need speed and power( speed + strength). Speed is the ability of the muscles to move limbs or joints quickly. Speed is needed in the approach stage of the long jump. Having good speed in the approach helps to build up momentum and power. This gives you a more powerful take off which should lead to a more successful jump.
Strength is the greatest amount of force your muscles can produce in one single effort. Strength is needed in the legs of a long jumper. Having good strength in your legs, means that you can use more force to push off the board and this makes you jump higher into the air, driving your legs up and forward for a better jump.
Power is a combination of speed and strength so this is therefore important for a long jumpers performance.
2. Relevant principles of training that a long jumper would consider in their training programme are:
- Progressive overload. This is when you gradually add to the demands of the training programme, each time it gets harder! To make my training programme progressive, I will alter the frequency, intensity and duration. If you dont make the training sessions harder, your fitness wont improve and it will stay at a constant level and therefore my performance/jump wont improve.
-Rest and recovery time- if you dont have long enough rest and recovery times then your body will over train. This could lead to overstretching or damage of muscles. To make sure you dont over train you should adapt the frequency, intensity and duration sensibly and not too much.
-reversibility- This is when, if you stop training for a period of time your body will return to what it was like before you started training. The longer you stop training for, the longer it will take to get back up to the same fitness level as you were at during training.

A long jumper would need aspects from physical, skill and mental related fitness. From physcical fitness they would need power which is a combination of speed + strength. Power is crucial for the long jump because the more explosive power you create at the take off board will result in more height and therefore a further distance. From skill related fitness they would need good co-ordination for the run up because the stride pattern must be consistent or else you will lose speed that is crucial for a good jump. From mental related fitness they would need mental rehearsal.Mental rehearsal is useful when it comes to competitions because it allows you to picture mentally in your head what it is you are about to do and if you focus on this then you won’t be distracted by the people watching you.
When making up a training programme a long jumper would need to consider several principles of training. They would need to make sure that the training programme was specific to them and their activity and what it was they were aiming to improve. They would need to progressively overload their training because if they don’t make their training progressively more difficult then they won’t improve. They can do this by changing the frequency, how many days a week they train, intensity, how difficult the training is and the duration of their training. They would also have to make sure that reversibility didn’t occur by not having many days off in between training.

1. A long jump performer would require physical, mental and skill related fitness. Physical fitness is the ability of a performer to execute physical tasks efficiently and effectively, power would be the required physical fitness requirement as power is a key aspect of the approach and landing. Skill related fitness is the ability of the performer to perform tasks successfully; timing would be a necessity for any long jumper as timing your steps so that your most powerful foot hits the board is key. Mental related fitness is (not too sure :S), level of arousal is crucial to a long jumper’s performance as you perform your best when u have a high level of arousal, however if u are suffering from fatigue you will perform less well.
2. Training principles are an important aspect of your long jump performance. You must ensure that your training is specific to YOU your activity and what your current level is. Progressive overload, variation (to stop boredom from occurring), long term planning, reversibility and health and safety must also be worked into your program.

Im just here to ask, ehm, see the powerpoints you have made about ‘Exam revision’, if we know that are we all set for the prelim? I meen if we are able to describe all the things in those powerpoints is that us ready for prelims?
POST BACK ASAP PAPAPLEASE

yeh, me again, hm if i were to complete a sample question from prep of the body would u be willing to mark it for me??
January 24th, 2008 at 1:29 pm
Yes David, if you can describe and explain all the sections in the power point then you will be in good preparation for the prelim.
I will be happy to mark anything that you bring in.
